a new dark comedy by Sam Post
directed by Maureen Shay at the the Neighborhood Theatre Winter, 1999 |
Eleven year old Matt has just lost his father and wants some information from his mother about the afterlife. His mother, Dinah, refuses to comfort him with the traditional concepts: heaven, and God. In fact, she obstructs her son's needs entirely by passing on to Matt her own rock solid belief in atheism.
Enter Zack, an intruder who presents himself as a homeless, handicapped man in need of assistance. Dinah is eager to help Zack, but her son pays the price.
Sam Post founded SOOP Theatre in Salisbury, in 1996, to produce his first play,
Coffee Therapy, under a regional artists grant from the Charlotte Arts and Science Council. Later that year the play was produced in Charlotte at Spirit Square, earning Creative Loafing Theatre Award nominations for best new play and best actor in a comedy (Gary
Thornburg), as well as publication by Palmetto Play Service. Married with two children, Mr. Post teaches middle school computer science in Salisbury. In addition to playwriting, he is also the author of nearly a dozen unpublished novels.
Darryl Casper, who has a long resume of leading roles in Chicago and Salisbury, plays Zack, the dumb mute, in Silent Visit. Casper played a number of the 24 roles in Coffee Therapy. Anne Cote Hoffman, a member of The Perch Comedy Sketch Troupe in Charlotte, plays Dinah, Matt's mother. She also played several roles in Coffee Therapy, including the face-twitching Dr.
Winkerbloom. Matt Tilman, a seventh grader, plays Matt. Maureen Shay, who directed Post's first play, also directs Silent Visit. She teaches high school English and theatre in Salisbury.
